My Job

Teaching has the potential to consume everything in one’s life.  In order to promote my mental health, I’ve been trying to separate my job from the things my students have to do themselves.  I’m not sure if this list is useful, correct, or complete, but it seems to help me in this moment.

Teacher’s job

  • Care about students as people.
  • Communicate respectfully at all times
  • Provide feedback (grades, comments, criticism)
  • Ask purposeful questions
  • Design lessons that require thinking and communication
  • Keep students focused
  • Have excellent subject matter knowledge
  • Do what’s right, even when no one is looking

Student’s Job

  • Come to class every day
  • Bring appropriate materials
  • Actively participate
  • Ask questions and seek help
  • Communicate respectfully
  • Take responsibility for learning (making up work, etc.)
  • Eat a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Get 8-9 hours of sleep every night
  • Do what’s right, even when no one is looking

If students and teacher do their jobs, it means that the year will be more pleasant for everyone.  In particular, the teacher will be able to trust the students more, resulting in more freedom for the students and more creative lessons from the teacher.
